Overview
We are seeking a motivated Distribution Designer I / Entry-Level Distribution Engineer to support the design and development of electrical utility distribution systems. This role is ideal for individuals beginning their career in the power and utilities industry, offering hands-on experience in both office-based design work and field data collection.
This position focuses on supporting simple distribution projects under close supervision while building foundational technical and industry skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform field data collection, site inspections, and documentation for distribution projects
- Assist in the design of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems
- Prepare computer-aided design (CAD) drawings and construction-ready documentation
- Develop material lists and support project cost estimation efforts
- Generate permitting packages and other required project documentation
- Coordinate with internal teams and occasionally interact with field crews or stakeholders
- Support storm restoration efforts and emergency response activities as needed
Work Environment
- Combination of office-based and field-based work
- Regular field visits with exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.)
- Work may involve active construction sites, uneven terrain, and utility infrastructure environments
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 1+ year of relevant work experience preferred (utilities, construction, or technical field)
- Basic understanding of or interest in electrical distribution systems
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn design and field practices
- Ability to work effectively under supervision in a team-oriented environment
Certifications & Requirements
- Valid driver’s license required
- Ability to adhere to safety standards and properly use personal protective equipment (PPE)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk long distances (up to 1 mile) on uneven terrain
- Capability to work outdoors in various environmental conditions
- Ability to lift up to 35 lbs as needed
- Comfortable using computers, drafting tools, and basic field equipment
