Description:
The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer is responsible for the design, development, modification, and support of control and instrumentation systems across generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure. This position ensures reliable system performance and regulatory compliance while supporting plant automation and operational efficiency. Assignments range from simple system updates to leading complex, cross-functional projects, depending on the engineer’s level of experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, specify, and implement instrumentation and control system components (e.g., PLCs, DCS, HMIs, sensors, actuators).
- Support the configuration and programming of control systems, logic, and alarms.
- Develop engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications for new installations and system upgrades.
- Participate in project planning, feasibility studies, and cost-benefit analysis.
- Perform troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and performance optimization of I&C systems.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, safety requirements, and internal engineering practices (e.g., IEEE, ISA, NFPA, NEC).
- Interface with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, operations, IT, cybersecurity).
- Support testing, commissioning, and turnover of new or modified systems.
- Maintain and update technical documentation for operations and regulatory use.
- Lead or mentor junior engineers and coordinate vendor/contractor work as needed.
Qualifications:
Engineer I (Entry-Level):
- Performs basic engineering tasks under close supervision.
- Applies standard I&C engineering practices and calculations.
- Participates in data collection, report preparation, and drafting of technical documents.
- Requires BS degree in Engineering (Electrical, Controls, or related discipline).
- No prior experience required; co-op or internship experience preferred.
- Must have strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
Engineer II:
- Independently executes moderately complex designs and analysis with guidance.
- Assists in budgeting and scheduling for I&C project components.
- Coordinates small system modifications and vendor support.
- Requires BS degree in Engineering + 2 years of related experience.
- Familiarity with control systems (DCS, PLC, SCADA), instrumentation calibration, and electrical schematics.
Engineer III:
- Serves as technical lead on medium to large I&C projects.
- Designs and implements control strategies to optimize plant performance.
- Performs reliability assessments and lifecycle cost analysis.
- Coordinates multi-discipline design teams and external consultants.
- Requires BS degree in Engineering + 5 years of experience.
- Advanced knowledge of I&C system integration, configuration, and field commissioning required.
Senior Engineer:
- Leads large-scale projects and complex control system upgrades.
- Develops long-term automation strategies and DCS architecture improvements.
- Advises management on emerging technologies and regulatory changes.
- Provides mentoring and reviews technical work of less experienced staff.
- Requires BS in Engineering + 8 years of experience, or PE + 8 years, or 12 years combined education/experience.
- Expert-level knowledge in plant instrumentation, advanced control systems, safety systems, and cybersecurity interfaces.
Additional Requirements:
- Export Control Compliance: This position may require access to information subject to U.S. Export Control Laws (e.g., DOE Part 810, EAR, ITAR). Candidates may be required to verify U.S. person status.
- Work Conditions: May require occasional travel, field work, or shift coverage.
- Security-Sensitive Work: Some assignments may be in regulated nuclear environments and require additional access screening.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PE License (highly desirable for Senior level).
- Experience in the power generation or utility industry.
- Proficiency with control system platforms (e.g., Emerson Ovation, Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
- Familiarity with NERC CIP or NRC security regulations for control systems.
- Working knowledge of process instrumentation and loop tuning.
